5. Philadelphia Eagles trade for Jordan Howard
For whatever reason, the Chicago Bears desperately wanted to rid themselves of running back Jordan Howard. It made zero sense, but when Matt Nagy took over as head coach, the rumors of Howard being shopped started.
This came despite him running for 1,313 yards and six touchdowns as a rookie and adding another 1,122 yards and nine scores as a sophomore. Even with Nagy calling the shots, Howard proved his worth, as he went for 935 yards and nine more touchdowns.
While his yards per carry did drop from 4.1 to 3.7, the Bears did him no favors, as their aerial attack was less than intimidating, which allowed defenses to close in on Howard.
In the end, they got their way and shipped off a productive runner, which got them practically nothing in return (a 2020 sixth-round pick) and created a glaring need on their roster.
Already without a first and second round pick, the Bears used their first draft pick, No. 73 overall, on running back David Montgomery. This proved they traded Howard simply for the sake of doing so, as they weren’t comfortable turning to Tarik Cohen full-time.
As bad as this move was for the Bears, it was brilliant for the Philadelphia Eagles. They gave up a late-round pick for a guy who was 65 yards short of three-straight 1,000-yard campaigns.
Seeing as how they will be trying to ease Carson Wentz back into the offense after another injury, adding someone like Howard was a vital move that will help them keep the chains moving, without putting all the pressure on their young quarterback.
