22. Cleveland Browns draft Greedy Williams

After trading away their first-round pick in the Odell Beckham Jr. deal, the Cleveland Browns were limited heading into the 2019 NFL Draft. With cornerback being one of their most pressing needs, all eyes were on players who could be there at No. 49 and whether they could become starters down the road or not.

One name who wasn’t looked at much was LSU Tigers cornerback Greedy Williams, simply because he seemed destined to go in the first round. Then, the draft started and Williams began slipping.

After the first round was over, he was still on the board and then reports surfaced that the cornerback-needy Arizona Cardinals were going Byron Murphy, meaning Williams would continue to slide.

Once he fell into the 40s, Cleveland general manager John Dorsey started making phone calls. He ended up making a deal with his good friend Chris Ballard of the Indianapolis Colts, sending one of Cleveland’s three picks in the fifth round to Indianapolis in order to move from 49 to No. 46, which was where they took Williams.

After he was selected, speculation about what led to his drop began. There was the belief that his struggles with tackling fueled his fall, but reports of a low score on the Wonderlic test were also said to have turned some teams off.

Whatever it was, the Browns got a player who was widely considered a first-round talent who has the potential to start in Week 1. That proved to be a great move on their part.
