Cleveland Browns: Re-drafting Day 3 of 2017 NFL Draft
By Cory Kinnan
Round 6, Pick 185: Chris Carson, RB, Oklahoma State
Original Pick: Caleb Brantley, DT, Florida
Prior to the 2017 draft, many believed Caleb Brantley had the talent to be a second round pick, but yet he fell to the sixth round where the Browns took a chance on him. Throughout the pre-draft process, Brantley was dealing with a domestic violence allegation that was later dismissed but did not excuse him.
After just one season in Cleveland and a change in general managers, Brantley did not make the final 53-man roster and was cut by John Dorsey. In his one year with the Browns, Brantley started one game and recorded two sacks, three tackles for loss, and two hits on the quarterback on the year; he appeared in 12 total games. Brantley is now a member of the team in Washington and appeared in seven games for them last season.
Chris Carson, on the other hand, was the 249th overall selection of the Seattle Seahawks and has started 17 total games in his career, including a 1,000-yard season in 2018. While the Browns ended up landing Nick Chubb one year later who looks like a great pick, he was not in the picture at this time as he was still recovering from a knee injury.
A running back who ran for 1,100 yards and nine touchdowns last year or a defensive tackle with a troubled past and one career start? The choice seems pretty clear here.
