NFC North: Darnell Savage, S, Green Bay Packers

This wasn’t an easy decision as the Green Bay Packers’ other first-round pick, Rashan Gary, has a case as well. So does Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Armon Watts. Both of those players can get after the quarterback.

Of course, Darnell Savage plays an off-ball position — way off. Savage, however, possess elite speed and the ability to track the ball in the air as a centerfielder. Alongside Adrian Amos, Savage’s usage will come in the form as a true free safety.

Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine will allow Savage to produce at a high level. To understand why Savage will shine, you must first look into Pettine’s past.

In 2013, Pettine coached Buffalo Bills safety Jairus Byrd, who battled an injury that season. Still, Byrd had four interceptions in 11 games and appeared destined to equate or surpass his nine interceptions he had during the 2009 season.

However, the most successful safety under Pettine’s scheme was Tashaun Gipson. In 2014, during his brief tenure with the Cleveland Browns, Pettine helped Gipson become a hot commodity.

That season, Gipson led the NFL with six interceptions. Pettine can use Savage in the same manner as a center-fielder or two-deep safety. Alongside Amos, Savage is primed for success. It also helps that Aaron Rodgers will be scoring plenty of points, so Savage will get many opportunities.
