Baltimore Ravens: 3 Vital statistics for 2019 season
43
No team in the NFL this past season allowed fewer yards per game than John Harbaugh’s club. The Baltimore Ravens were tops in the league in total defense and equally proficient against the run (fourth) and pass (fifth).
Don Martindale’s unit allowed only 32 offensive touchdowns in 16 regular-season contests. And despite falling in the AFC Wild Card Playoffs at home, kept Philip Rivers and the Los Angeles Chargers’ attack under wraps for the most part (243 total yards) in the 23-17 setback.
Led by outside linebacker Za’Darius Smith (8.5), Terrell Suggs (7) and Matt Judon (7), the Ravens totaled 43 sacks this past season. But Smith was signed by the Green Bay Packers and Suggs — entering his 17th NFL season — is now with the Arizona Cardinals.
So where will the pass rush come from in 2019? Martindale will need some of the team’s younger players to step up this season. In free agency, Baltimore did add one-time Denver Broncos’ first-round pick Shane Ray. But injuries have been an issue for the four-year pro as of late.
Of course, Judon does return and linebacker Patrick Onwuasor not only finished fourth on the club with 5.5 sacks this past year but was fourth on the club with 54 tackles. So who will lead the Ravens in quarterback traps by season’s end? An interesting question indeed.
