1. New York Jets: Chase Young, EDGE, Ohio State

For each of the past two seasons, a quarterback has gone No. 1 overall but that’s not the case in this 2020 NFL Mock Draft as the New York Jets are still rolling with Sam Darnold as their starter. The No. 3 overall pick out of USC was 4-9 as a starter but the team knew he needed some refinement once he was in the league.

Darnold, who flashed plenty of potential, only had two seasons of experience at the collegiate level. The key for the Jets will be showing patience as he develops, as well as surrounding him with plenty of weapons. While aiming to add weapons, they did add Le’Veon Bell in the offseason as well as a solid slot receiver in Jamison Crowder.

Those two should help take the pressure off Darnold, but it’s still hard to believe in this team as long as Adam Gase is the head coach. The former Miami Dolphins shot caller was tough for players to deal with in South Beach and there were reports that players were going to start requesting to leave when had he been retained.

That’s the reason they ended up with the first pick here, which they use to beef up the pass rush with the selection of Chase Young from Ohio State. The 6-5, 265-pound defensive end would play linebacker in the New York 3-4 defense but should have no problem bringing the heat off the edge no matter where he lines up.

The Jets will still need to get things figured out on offense, but the addition of Young to a defense that has Leonard Williams, Quinnen Williams Jamal Adams, and C.J. Mosley makes their defense rather intimidating.
