Cleveland Browns: Winners and losers from Preseason Week 2
Losers
Kareem Hunt, RB
Despite facing an eight-game suspension, no one is doubting that Kareem Hunt has a place on the Browns whenever he returns. However, with reports looming from training camp that he’s been a lackluster performer, a mediocre performance against the Colts wasn’t what he needed. But Hunt managed just six yards on his two carries and notched no receptions in the passing game.
We know what Hunt is capable of but it will be interesting to see if he can get it going in the preseason before his suspension begins.
Sheldrick Redwine, S
You might believe that a 2019 fourth-round pick should be a lock to make the 53-man roster. With games like Saturday’s, though, that may not be a given for Sheldrick Redwine at safety.
After raising plenty of question marks in the first week of the preseason, the rookie defensive back didn’t do anything to alleviate concerns against the Colts. Even though he finished with six total tackles for the game, Redwine missed several tackles that he should’ve made and wasn’t special (to put it kindly) in coverage. He needs to step up big over the final two weeks of the preseason if he wants to be on the final roster.
Most of the Offensive Line
Yes, Forbes played extremely well and continued to turn heads on the Cleveland offensive line. However, the rest of the position group really struggled, particularly once the first team got off the field. That makes what Johnson did more impressive and what Hunt didn’t do a little more acceptable. However, for a Browns team looking for answers on the offensive line, this matchup on Saturday night provided no answers in the slightest.
Mack Wilson, LB
One of the winners in the first week of the preseason, the rookie linebacker had some growing pains against the Colts on Saturday afternoon. Two plays in particular that stood out were getting bested by Marlon Mack‘s stiff-arm in the run game and then later letting Jacoby Brissett escape on what should’ve been a sack.
The talent of Wilson has been evident and, if you’re looking for silver linings, he was in position to make plays on both of his major bad moments against Indianapolis. However, if he wants to be an effective linebacker in the NFL, as the Browns hope he can be, those plays need to be made.
