Jacksonville Jaguars: Leonard Fournette the victim of offensive identity
By Larry Brake
Fournette struggled in the 2018 Jaguars offense
After the disappointing loss in the AFC Championship Game, there were high expectations for 2018. Jacksonville opened the season with two big wins, especially the win against New England in Week 2. Everything seemed to fall apart offensively throughout the rest of the season, however.
Fournette played in eight games because of injuries and suspension. His numbers fell dramatically from his rookie year. He rushed for 439 yards and caught 22 passes for 185 yards with six touchdowns.
Marrone decided to move away from Bortles as his starting quarterback. Cody Kessler was equally as ineffective as the starter. How do you explain such a dramatic reduction in offensive production?
Did the Jaguars implement another philosophy into the offense? Bortles was able to thrive in the short passing attack via the west coast system. He was not able to transform into the deep passing game of the Air Coryell offense.
In two seasons, the Jaguars coaching staff had mixed three different schemes into an offense. They say that they are a power run team but utilize zone-blocking while wanting to have a vertical passing game.
Imagine trying to run Fournette sideways in hopes of going straight ahead. Is it possible to throw deep to receivers with quarterbacks that are not accurate on deep throws? Another year brings about another change.
