Heading into 2019, the Cowboys understood they needed safety help in the worst way. They used many of their 30 allotted visits on safeties and vice president Stephen Jones even identified safety (as well as tight end) as the areas to focus on. Then in the draft, they ignored all safeties and took Trysten Hill — and two of those safeties have been playing really well as Juan Thornhill and Taylor Rapp are both starters for their teams.

Jones and the rest of the front office then ignored safety until round six and tight end the entire draft. They cannot do that again. Ideally, they will land someone such as Grant Delpit from LSU but they haven’t fallen enough in the standings — thanks to the NFC East’s incompetence — to land him.

They grab arguably the second-best safety in the class here though as Ashtyn Davis is their second-round selection. Davis is constantly around the ball and has 166 tackles, seven interceptions (yes Cowboys fans, defensive backs are allowed to get interceptions) and 12 pass defenses.

The only question is whether or not Davis lasts this long. Right now, he’s projected to but he has a name that’s been gaining momentum as of late. If he does come off the board before this, Dallas still absolutely has to take a safety because their current defensive backfield is not good.
