2. Diontae Johnson shines alone

The Steelers had arguably the most talented offense in the NFL just a few years ago. Now, Johnson looks like the team’s best offensive option. That’s not an insult to Johnson, but he’s a far cry from Le’Veon Bell, Antonio Brown, etc.

More from NFL Spin Zone

While Smith-Schuster dealt with injuries and inconsistent play, Johnson took over a significant role in Pittsburgh’s offense around the middle of the season. Since Pittsburgh’s bye in Week 7, Johnson tallied 35 receptions, 414 yards, and three receiving touchdowns. He also played a vital role as a punt returner, especially in Week 14.

Smith-Schuster is the more accomplished and more talented player, but Johnson has the hot hand. While Smith-Schuster is dealing with injuries, external criticism from the fan base, and double coverages, Johnson gets results. It’s unfortunate that Smith-Schuster, a genuinely talented and good player, is dealing with so many issues, but his loss is Johnson’s gain.

Johnson is averaging roughly six receptions and 67 receiving yards in his last three games. He easily leads the team in both categories during that time. The rookie is first on the team in receptions and is second in receiving yards and touchdowns this season.

While Pittsburgh wants all of its players to succeed on Sunday, it looks like Johnson will be the sole standout receiver.
