Pick Analysis. S. LSU. 1. Scouting Report. Grant Delpit. player. 817

No position was more criminally ignored during the Jason Garrett and Rod Marinelli era than safety. The Cowboys coaches just never believed in it as a game-changing position which is why they balked at the cost to trade for Earl Thomas and then in the following offseason, they again declined to pay him what the market said he was worth.

More from NFL Spin Zone

They did the same thing when Tyrann Mathieu was cut by the Arizona Cardinals in 2018. After not being able to trade for Thomas, the playmaker hit the open market and ended up signing a one-year $7 million ‘prove-it’ deal with the Houston Texans. He parlayed that into a three-year $42 million deal with the Kansas City Chiefs.

While it’s understandable Dallas didn’t get in on that deal, being unwilling to give him $7 million was inexcusable — especially when you consider they were trying to give wide receiver Sammy Watkins $16 million in 2018 free agency.

With that all out of my system, I now focus on the 2020 NFL Draft and the Cowboys finally get their game-changing safety in Grant Delpit from LSU. There was a time where it looked as though they might have to trade up for his services, but their flame-out to close the 2019 campaign put them in a spot where he could be available.

Delpit is a player who can not only help in coverage but will also get involved in the running game as well. He’s the exact type of player the Cowboys defense has been lacking for years and will make an impact right away.
