NFL Free Agency 2020: 5 Best landing spots for Melvin Gordon
By Samuel Teets
2. Houston Texans
From 2016-2018 Lamar Miller quietly racked up 2,934 rushing yards and 678 receiving yards. He made the Pro Bowl in 2018. Unfortunately, all of that wear and tear caught up with the 28-year-old. Miller tore his ACL in a preseason game last year. He missed the entire regular season.
With Miller headed to injured reserve (IR), the Texans traded Martinas Rankin to the Kansas City Chiefs for Carlos Hyde. After walking away from the San Francisco 49ers following the 2017 season, Hyde never found a stable home in 2018. However, he revived his career with the Texans.
The former second-round pick rushed for 1,070 yards and six touchdowns with Houston. Duke Johnson, who the Texans acquired from Cleveland in early August, contributed 410 receiving and 410 rushing yards. Houston finished ninth in the NFL with 125.6 rushing yards per game.
However, three of the team’s running backs will enter free agency this spring. Both Hyde and Miller need new contracts. The fourth-string running back, Taiwan Jones, is also headed out the door.
The Texans possess slightly over $64 million in cap space. With needs at cornerback, running back, and along the offensive line, Houston should spend their money wisely. It’s never too early to consider Deshaun Watson‘s eventual extension as well.
While signing Gordon could constrict Houston’s wallet, the Texans need another offensive threat to compliment Watson and DeAndre Hopkins. Miller’s age and recent injury likely rules him out. Hyde plays well, but his price will become inflated after this past season. He’s not a true star, and it’s about time the Texans make some tough moves so they can compete for a title right now.
