1. Don’t punt the later rounds

By the time the Dolphins get to the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft, they will likely have selected at least 10 players at a variety of positions. It’s easy to assume that the late-round players won’t make the roster and that those picks can be spent on insignificant positions.

Yet, the Dolphins need to ensure they grab high-upside rookies at the back end of the draft.

While this appears obvious, I think the point needs to be hammered home. After all, Chris Grier does have a history of “punting” on seventh rounders.

In 2016, he used a seventh-round pick on a quarterback who couldn’t make the roster; in 2018, he selected a kicker with his seventh-round pick. While it’s hard to manage a high success rate in the final rounds of the draft, Miami has to take advantage of its late-round draft capital.

Selecting a position without high-upside potential is a waste of a draft pick. Kickers, punters, and camp-arm quarterbacks can be had as undrafted free agents. Grier and company need to utilize their draft capital and spend it on players who have the potential to provide an impact.
