2021 NFL Mock Draft: Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields are golden tickets
There were two things made definitively clear by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2019 season. For one, this roster has the potential to make the Steelers one of the legitimate contenders in the AFC if quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is healthy. But at the same time, the most recent campaign brought to light the sobering truth that the heir to Big Ben at the helm of the Steelers offense is most definitely not on the roster right now.
With his age and injury history, Roethlisberger may not have many years left in the NFL. Thus, the Steelers must use their first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft to find the guy that can take over when the time comes.
The newest addition to the Georgia Bulldogs via the transfer portal, Jamie Newman has that type of upside. A unique blend of size, a nice arm and athleticism, the 6-4, 230-pounder was a dynamic weapon at Wake Forest who threw for 2,868 yards and 26 touchdowns while rushing for 574 yards and six scores last season in 12 games while fighting through injuries.
Make no mistake, Newman has some development ahead as a passer. However, working at Georgia should help him progress in that regard. And if the Steelers can bring him in to work behind Big Ben for a year, the quarterback has the potential to be the legitimate successor in the Steel City.
