New York Giants: Grading every pick in the 2020 NFL Draft
Round 5, Pick 150: Shane Lemieux, G, Oregon
Grade: C
Dave Gettleman once again opted to pass on taking a wide receiver. Instead, he found himself a starting guard in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft in Shane Lemieux. He’s a tenacious short arm guard who dominates using power and physicality. Although he’s not the most athletic, he does a great job mirroring defenders.
He has enough short-area quickness to get to the second level and dominate linebackers. He’s a locomotive once he gets going which aids in his ability to pull. Once he gets his hands on defenders, he controls the gap. He’s a plug-and-play guard for gap running scheme that Jason Garrett employs
Additionally, Garrett’s offense ideally suits what Lemieux does the best as a pass protector. The interior lineman does his best work in short sets where he’s able to snap in place and limits his chances of overextending. This was a pick about attitude and adding a player with grit who can bring attitude to the offensive line.
If he’s able to earn a starting job, plugging him into either guard spot is guaranteed to improve the running game. If Lemieux doesn’t start, he’s going to make one heck of a backup. This was one of those Gettleman picks that speaks to what he likes a general manager.
