NFL Quarterback Power Rankings 2020: Patrick Mahomes is head of the class
By Samuel Teets
Tyrod Taylor entered the NFL as a sixth-round pick by the Baltimore Ravens. However, he made a name for himself with the Buffalo Bills. In 2015, Taylor took over as Buffalo’s starter and made the Pro Bowl. In his three-year stint at the helm, Taylor led the Bills to a 22-20 record and one playoff bid.
In 2018, the Cleveland Browns traded for Taylor and gave the veteran their starting quarterback job. However, a rookie named Baker Mayfield took the job from Taylor by Week 4. Now, Taylor finds himself in a similar situation. The Chargers recently used the sixth overall pick on Justin Herbert. Teams don’t draft quarterbacks that high to have them ride the bench. Herbert will start at some point in 2020.
Taylor seems destined to turn over the starting quarterback job to Herbert within the first four to six weeks of the 2020 season. While Taylor doesn’t turn the ball over often, he also lacks the high ceiling teams look for. Considering that Herbert threw for 3,471 yards, 32 touchdowns and six interceptions at Oregon last season while completing 66.8 percent of his pass attempts, there’s a chance the rookie possesses the ceiling Los Angeles wants.
If Taylor holds onto the starting job in Los Angeles, he’ll never complain about the offense’s supporting cast. The Chargers flaunt two 1,000-yard receivers, a rising star at tight end, one of the best pass-catching backs in football and a retooled offensive line. Los Angeles should battle for a Wild Card spot this coming season.
