Baltimore Ravens: Early 55-man roster predictions after the 2020 draft
By Samuel Teets
Defensive Linemen (6): Calais Campbell, Justin Madubuike, Jihad Ward, Broderick Washington, Brandon Williams, Derek Wolfe
Baltimore’s defensive front gave opponents fits last year, but the unit only got better this offseason. The Ravens only allowed 93.4 rushing yards per game in 2019, the fifth-fewest in the NFL, and the franchise still added two new starters.
The Ravens said goodbye to Michael Pierce this offseason, letting the former undrafted free agent test the market. The team also parted ways with Chris Wormley, who they sent to Pittsburgh for a fifth-round pick. As replacements, Baltimore signed Derek Wolfe and traded for Calais Campbell.
At 33 years old, Campbell is nearing the end of his prime. However, the veteran did make the Pro Bowl last season by recording 56 tackles, 6.5 sacks, and 25 quarterback hits. Baltimore also signed Wolfe to a one-year deal worth $3 million. The low-risk deal nets Baltimore a player who set a career-high with seven sacks last season. Campbell and Wolfe join Brandon Williams as the team’s projected starters along the defensive line.
However, the Ravens weren’t satisfied with their veteran additions. The team also selected Texas A&M’s Justin Madubuike in the third-round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Madubuike is a developmental player, but he provides excellent value as a third-round selection. The young defensive tackle tallied 85 tackles, 22 tackles for loss and 11 sacks during his final two collegiate seasons.
Jihad Ward and Broderick Washington Jr., a rookie fifth-round selection, should round out Baltimore’s defensive line.
