San Francisco 49ers: Can Jimmy Garoppolo cut back on the turnovers?

Last season, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo played in his sixth NFL campaign. But it was the first time that the 2014 second-round pick from Eastern Illinois by the New England Patriots in 2014 played in all 16 games. Prior to that, the talented performer had made a combined 10 starts with the Pats and San Francisco 49ers.

So this past season, Garoppolo finished the year completing 69.1 percent of his throws for 3,978 yards and more than twice as many touchdown passes (27) as interceptions (13). But it should also be noted that the relatively-inexperienced signal-caller put the ball on the ground 10 times and lost five of those fumbles.

In the team’s three-game postseason run, there were no fumbles but he was picked off once in the divisional round vs. the Vikings and served up two interceptions in the Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs.

So can Garoppolo cut back on the mistakes? Common sense says yes as he gets more playing time. When you take into account that he really hasn’t played a lot of football for a six-year veteran (for various reasons), there’s no reason to think that he won’t continue to progress under head coach Kyle Shanahan.
