Ranking AFC North teams by quarterback situation: Steelers fall to bottom
By Lucas Schuh
No. 1 AFC North quarterback situation: Baltimore Ravens
Projected Starter: Lamar Jackson
Backup: Trace McSorely, Robert Griffin III, Tyler Huntley
In the 2018 NFL Draft, the Ravens were faced with an interesting decision. Joe Flacco had led them to a Super Bowl victory, yes, but had seemingly capped the team’s ceiling since. It was a decision of whether or not to stick it out with him or go in a new direction. After two years of seeing Lamar Jackson as the helm, it’s clear they made the right choice.
Jackson was the last pick of the first round in 2018, taken after Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Josh Allen and Josh Rosen. To this point, he’s been the best of his peers to this point. His passing ability was a concern coming out of college but he has proven that his legs can overcome any development still needed with his arm. His 2019 NFL MVP trophy stands as evidence enough of that.
Baltimore has gone all-in on Jackson and what he does at the quarterback position that makes him unique. That extends to the backups as well as there may not be any players who turn heads but they all fit what the Ravens like to do. They have a number of quarterbacks on the roster behind Jackson who can step in and thrive in the run-first offense that they’ve established.
At just 23 years old, Jackson has already established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. The Ravens got a steal in the 2018 draft and, in terms of the position in the AFC North, no team is in a better position moving forward than Baltimore.
