2. Jamal Adams forces two turnovers

Adams is one of the best safeties in football. With Derwin James missing the entire season, I feel confident in crowing Adams as the top player at his position. The former New York Jet made an immediate impact in Week 1, leading Seattle with 12 total tackles. He also sacked Matt Ryan, made two quarterback hits, and dropped players for losses twice.

While Adams’ Seahawks debut turned heads, the 24-year-old can put on an even larger display in Week 2. Adams faces Cam Newton, and that’s a matchup that plays to the safety’s strengths. The LSU product excels as a hitter and pass-rusher while Newton has three seasons with at least nine fumbles. If the 31-year-old quarterback matches his 15-carry mark from Week 1, he and Adams should collide a few times.

The Patriots held Newton back in Week 1, only giving him 19 pass attempts. If New England unleashes the former MVP, Adams and Quandre Diggs are prime candidates for intercepting passes. No matter how the Patriots attack Seattle, Belichick’s team can’t avoid Adams.

1. Wilson remains perfect

Wilson didn’t throw an interception until Week 7 last season, and defenses only picked him off five times during the year. Outside of Aaron Rodgers, Wilson is the best quarterback when it comes to protecting the football. He faces formidable foes in the Patriots, who intercepted Fitzpatrick three times in Week 1.

While Fitzpatrick and the Miami Dolphins are leagues below Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks, that shouldn’t discount New England’s accomplishments. Gilmore, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, Jackson, and former special teams All-Pro Adrian Phillips all intercepted passes on Sunday. Devin McCourty continues providing a reliable safety net deep in the secondary as well.

New England’s defense isn’t as dominant as it was in 2019, but the secondary hasn’t lost any punch. Coming off a crushing victory against the Falcons, where Atlanta’s secondary barely challenged Wilson, playing the Patriots poses a significant challenge. Week 2 is also a perfect test for Seattle’s young receivers. We’ll see how they handle playing against an experienced secondary with proven stars.

This season is Wilson’s best shot at winning an MVP. He danced around the award in 2017 and 2019 but came up short both years. Now that he’s surrounded by his best supporting cast since the Legion of Boom days, expectations are greater than in recent seasons. We’ll see if Wilson is real MVP material in Week 2.
