New England Patriots: 5 Perfect fits in the 2021 NFL Draft
New England Patriots perfect draft fit No. 1: Kellen Mond, QB, Texas A&M
With Cam Newton departing, the Patriots are in the quarterback market again. The two signal-callers on their roster are Jarrett Stidham and NFL vet Bryan Hoyer. Bill Belichick could opt for free agency or trade to fill the quarterback void. It’s hard to imagine the Patriots giving up a first-round pick for a quarterback — unless it’s Matthew Stafford.
Still, it may cost too much to get him, and the free-agent quarterbacks available aren’t long term answers. Drafting a quarterback late in the 2021 NFL Draft makes sense for them regardless of what they decide to do. A player like Texas A&M Kellen Mond is a solid option as a developmental prospect.
Mond played four seasons for the Aggies for Jimbo Fisher, displaying leadership and poise. The lanky 6-2, 202-pound quarterback is a bit undersized but he has all the tools for developmental prospect. His release is quick and compact. He has plenty of arm strength and velocity to make all the throws. He shows confidence when asked to fit throws in tight windows. And he displays decent touch on deep balls.
With the Patriots looking to employ more RPOs, he’ll fit right in. He finished runs and works well outside the pocket on bootlegs and rollouts. Mond has poise, escapability and athleticism; a toolsy prospect for the modern-day NFL.
