Best trade in Green Bay Packers history: Acquiring Brett Favre

While most remember him for his days slinging the ball down a frozen field in Green Bay, Brett Favre didn’t actually begin his career in Wisconsin.

With the 33rd overall pick in the 1991 NFL Draft, the Atlanta Falcons snagged him first. After a dismal start to his career, however, which included playing in only two games and not completing a single pass in his four attempts, they quickly moved on.

Despite the horrific stats, the Packers saw something special in Favre. So much so that they sent over the 19th overall pick for the QB. Needless to say, the trade was about as one-sided as can be. The Falcons picked up running back Tony Smith with their new draft selection and he subsequently went on to play three seasons for the squad before he was ultimately exiled from the league due to his poor play. Favre, on the other hand, became one of the greatest quarterbacks the game has ever seen.

The accolades are seemingly endless as he racked up 11 Pro Bowl appearances, three MVP awards, three First-Team All-Pro selections and a Super Bowl. Favre’s name will always be mentioned amongst the game’s greats as he ranks in the top five all-time in completed passes with 6,300, passing yards with 71,838 and passing touchdowns with 508.

This one was an easy call.
