NFL: The best trade in each franchise’s history
Best trade in Kansas City Chiefs history: Acquiring Patrick Mahomes
It doesn’t matter that Alex Smith was a very good quarterback who was a major piece to the foundation of the Kansas City Chiefs. It also doesn’t matter that Joe Montana played two great years with the franchise in the 90s. The fact that Tony Gonzalez dominated the league from the tight end position for the better part of a decade is also a moot point.
Regardless of Patrick Mahomes arriving at the Chiefs doorstep only a few years ago, he is far and away the best trade in franchise history. With the 27th overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft, head coach Andy Reid always had an eye on the gunslinger from Texas Tech. The Buffalo Bills handed over their tenth pick but not without the Chiefs forking over the 27th overall pick, third-round selection and their first-rounder in 2018.
The Bills actually nabbed some good players in starting tackle Dion Dawkins and starting linebacker Tremaine Edmunds. They also pulled a great corner in Tre’Davious White. Even with that sort of haul, the Chiefs clearly won this trade. It might be early in his career but Mahomes has been flat-out ridiculous. He won the league MVP award in his first full year as the starter, throwing for over 5,000 yards and 50 TDs. He also had his team on the brink of a Super Bowl appearance, losing in overtime to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game.
The following year, Mahomes led the Chiefs to a Super Bowl win for the first time in over 50 years. This past season, he had another ridiculous year, throwing for over 4,000 yards and making another Super Bowl appearance, though he would fall short this time around to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also made the Pro Bowl in every season since he became a starter.
Currently, Mahomes is widely regarded as the best player in the NFL and at only 25 years of age, the history books will most likely be littered with his name spewed all over it.
