NFL: The best trade in each franchise’s history
Best trade in Cleveland Browns history: Acquiring Frank Ryan
The Cleveland Browns don’t have a ton of good history when it comes to NFL success, let alone good trades. Yet, in 1962, the bottom-feeding Browns made a move that showed a level of discernment they haven’t always displayed.
Frank Ryan of the LA Rams was a solid QB during his first few years. After spending the first three years of his career glued to the bench, Ryan eventually got the chance to play and put up solid numbers. Seemingly tired of their inept play at the position, the Browns sent over Larry Stephens, who only lasted one season with his new team, along with a third and sixth-rounder. Once Ryan landed in his new home, he made sure they didn’t regret picking him up.
In his first year as a starter, Ryan threw for over 2,000 yards, a meager number by today’s standards but an eye-catching one in the 1960s. From there, Ryan did what many Browns fans haven’t seen during their entire lifetime.
Win a Super Bowl.
Ryan ran through the league in 1964. He threw for over 2,400 yards and nailed 25 touchdowns while leading the Browns to a 10-3-1 season. The Browns went on to crush the Colts 27-0 to win the title. It’s almost impossible to think of the Browns as a winning franchise considering how they have floundered in mediocrity for decades until recently.
Ryan was the last QB to lead the Browns to an NFL championship and made three Pro Bowls during his time there. This wildly successful trade easily ranks number one in their history considering there isn’t a ton of other success stories.
