NFL Draft: Re-drafting every first-round pick from 2017 NFL Draft: 28, QB Nick Mullens

Originally undrafted

The Cowboys had something special brewing. The defense was firing on all cylinders, their offensive line was still considered to be the league’s best, Ezekiel Elliot was thought to be the best running back in the world and quarterback Dak Prescott was and still is, considered one of the best in the game.

While things haven’t worked out the way they were expecting, the biggest hole in their roster became glaringly noticeable this past season. After spending the first four years of his career as an Ironman, Prescott went down due to a broken ankle. Although Andy Dalton was signed in the offseason to mitigate things, he was essentially a shell of himself. Nick Mullens, on the other hand, is a player that is proven to be a reliable backup and above average starter in the league.

Just this past season, while the wins were few and far between, Mullens made the San Francisco 49ers a competitive bunch despite a ridiculously long line of injuries. In ten games and eight starts in 2020, Mullens threw for 2,437 yards, much better numbers than the 2,170 yards Dalton threw for in more games and starts.

This pick isn’t about winning the Super Bowl, it’s more so about the Cowboys figuring out a way to keep the ball rolling when Prescott goes down.
