30 worst No. 1 overall picks in NFL Draft history: 21. QB, Baker Mayfield

Stats:

  • 11,115 passing yards
  • 75 touchdowns
  • 43 interceptions

Baker Mayfield has the bravado and swag of someone who’s a 15 time Pro Bowler and multiple-time league MVP. The only thing is, he hasn’t accomplished any of that.

Mayfield’s borderline irrational confidence helped stack up his trophy case on the collegiate level. Mayfield is a two-time walk on at Texas Tech and Oklahoma, as well as a Heisman Trophy winner. After being selected with the number one overall pick in 2018 by the Cleveland Browns, it came as somewhat of a shock.

Still, Mayfield balled out.

During his first year, Mayfield set a rookie record for touchdown passes with 27, although it’s since been broken this past season by Justin Herbert.

But just when Browns fans believed it was safe to come outside as Cleveland had effectively placed a stacked team around Mayfield, including trading for all-world wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Things, of course, went the wrong way. Mayfield threw a career-high 21 interceptions and his 59.4 completion percentage was pathetic considering the weapons he had at his disposal.

To his credit, Mayfield bounced back nicely this past season. The numbers won’t jump off the page as he threw for 3,563 yards and 26 touchdowns but unlike in year two, he was consistent. With Mayfield not only pushing the Browns into the postseason for the first time in what appeared to be centuries but also beating the Pittsburgh Steelers, Browns fans will be expecting more. If he can repeat that level of success, we’ll take Baker off this list in a hurry.
