NFL Draft: 30 worst No. 1 overall picks in league history
30 worst No. 1 overall picks in NFL Draft history: 20. QB, Jared Goff
Stats:
- 18,171 passing yards
- 107 touchdowns
- 55 interceptions
It’s still early in the career of quarterback Jared Goff but by the looks of it, things aren’t going in the right direction. His first year in the league should be viewed as an anomaly. He threw for only 1,089 yards, five touchdowns and seven interceptions in seven games. We’ll give him a pass considering his head coach was the supremely overrated Jeff Fisher. Once he was given his walking papers and Sean McVay came into town, things immediately got better.
Goff became more poise in the pocket and extremely accurate. He was selected to back-to-back Pro Bowls and appeared to be on the verge of spearheading a dynasty as the Los Angeles Rams made it to the Super Bowl in 2018. With that said, things went terribly wrong.
Goff went 19-38 for 229 yards, he didn’t throw a single touchdown but threw an interception on the night. Since then, Goff has seemingly regressed.
On its face, 4,638 passing yards in 2019 and 3,952 passing yards in 2020 appear to be terrific numbers but Goff was ultra-conservative. Seldom would he push the ball down the field and instead, opted to dink and dunk his way to the end zone.
Both McVay and the Rams organization decided to ditch their lame-duck quarterback this past season, trading him in for gunslinger Matthew Stafford.
At only the age of 26, Goff still has time to turn his career around. He’s experienced a lot of success up until this point and can’t be considered a complete bust just yet.
