NFL Draft: 30 worst No. 1 overall picks in league history
30 worst No. 1 overall picks in NFL Draft history: 19. QB, Jameis Winston
Stats:
- 19812 passing yards
- 121 touchdowns
- 88 interceptions
Under normal circumstances, it would be difficult to say that Jameis Winston is a flat-out bust. There are names on this list that have never had even a modicum of success in the league. Yet, Winston draws comparisons to a fellow member on this list, Jadeveon Clowney.
Much like Clowney, Winston has shown incredible flashes. Perhaps more so than anybody on this list, in fact. Winston came into the league with a Heisman Trophy in one hand and a National Championship in another. In short, he was terrific at Florida State University. But unlike the vast majority of this list where the league simply overwhelmed them, Winston performed just fine for years.
In his 2015 rookie campaign for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Winston threw for over 4,000 yards. He followed that up with yet another 4,000 yard season as well. The problem for Winston was twofold. For one, he never truly contributed to winning, putting together only a single season in which he led his team to an above-average record. Next, Winston had a major turnover problem.
It became more and more arduous to have Winston at the quarterback position when he has rarely shown any level of discernment. In his most recent season as a full-time starter which came in 2019, Winston led the league in passing with 5,109 yard’s, but he also led in interceptions with 30. When it comes to Winston, you essentially have to take the good with the bad. While his numbers might be impressive, he has to clean up the turnovers. At the age of 30, Winston still has a chance to get off this list. With that said, he’s running out of time.
