NFL Draft 2021: Tampa Bay Buccaneers pick Joe Tryon, compares to Ricky Jackson

Some linebackers specialize in knocking the ball loose. Others tend to be great in coverage. We can’t forget about the linebackers who simply love sending a message by landing the big hit.

In the case of Ricky Jackson and Joe Tryon, they specialized in all of the above. Regardless of Tryon skipping his final season, the defending Super Bowl champions in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers believed they saw more than enough to view him as a valuable member of an already stacked squad. If things break right and Tryon gets the playing time he needs to develop, he could very well turn into the second coming of Jackson.

With eight sacks at Washington University last year, Tryon was a rough and rugged player, much in the same way that Jackson was. It’s the unique bull rush, speed and technique that makes this comparison apropos. Jackson had six seasons in which he was a double-digit sack producer. While Tryon has yet to do that, he’s played really only two full seasons of ball at the highest level.

Unlike many of the players in this draft, Tryon is going to have to make a splash if he wants to get on the field. If he’s given the opportunity, however, Tampa will quickly realize that they have a potential Hall of Famer on their hands.
