NFL: Creating the all-time roster with football’s legends: CB, Richard ” Night Train ” Lane

Career stats:

  • 68 interceptions

Accolades:

  • 7 time Pro Bowler
  • 3 time All-Pro

The footage of Richard “Night Train” Lane may look a bit blurry and almost unrecognizable. Many of his game tapes are only available in black and white but his impact on the league was clear as day. Lane was the definition of a lockdown corner during the 1950s and 60s. While it may have been roughly half a century since Lane has been on the field, his 68 career interceptions still rank fourth all-time.

During his 14 year career, Lane only had four seasons in which he didn’t have at least five interceptions on the year. At 6-1 and just under 200 pounds, Lane wasn’t the biggest corner in the world but he was physical and wouldn’t allow defenders to bully him for easy yardage. Oftentimes, quarterbacks would look in the opposite direction as opposed to challenging Lane with a barrage of passes.

With the amount of pressure that will be coming upfront from players such as Michael Strahan and Reggie White, Lane will have the opportunity to shine once the ball comes in his direction, which by all accounts, won’t happen often.
