Dallas Cowboys: Ranking new additions by order of importance
By Randy Gurzi
3. Damontae Kazee, FS
For whatever reason, the Cowboys front office simply hates safeties. They will tell you they don’t, but they’re lying to you.
For example, Stephen Jones went into the draft talking about what a priority the position was and even said they haven’t intentionally ignored it in the past. He followed that up by saying they just valued pretty much every position more.
Then, they proved that again when they drafted no safeties. At all. Not one.
Okay, so there’s a chance Israel Mukuamu could play safety, but that would require him changing positions and that’s never a sure thing. Instead, they simply took three cornerbacks, three defensive linemen, and two linebackers with zero attention going to the safeties.
That entire rant brings us back to why the signing of Damontae Kazee is so important — but we aren’t letting this staff off the hook. They only landed him because Kazee was willing to take an insanely cheap one-year deal and chances are they were already considering releasing him as they tend to do whenever they sign a safety.
But since they elected not to draft anyone at all, Kazee should be the starting free safety in 2021. And if so, he would be the best ball hawk this team has had in years.
As a second-year player under Dan Quinn in 2018, Kazee has seven interceptions. He had three more the following season but then played in just four games this past year after tearing his Achilles tendon.
There’s a concern there but if he can bounce back from that, he should be fine. Kazee had never missed a game before the injury, so there’s hope that he can come in and prove he deserves a longer contract. Which will surely be given by another team since the Jones family hates safeties. More than anything.
