Quarterly MVP odds: +7500 Trey Lance

We get it, we truly do.

Trey Lance looks like he has all of the tools in the world. In 2019, his sophomore season at North Dakota State, Lance threw for 2,786 yards, 28 touchdowns, and check this, zero interceptions. The San Francisco 49ers wasted no time in taking him with the third overall pick in this year’s draft. But while he has a ton of potential, he shouldn’t even be on this list in terms of MVP odds.

It isn’t because we believe he isn’t any good. It’s simply because he’s stuck behind Jimmy Garoppolo. At the moment though, Jimmy G is out of the picture due to injury but once he returns, we expect him to take his rightful spot back in the starting lineup.

If, for some reason, the 49ers decide to roll with Lance for the rest of the season, we still don’t believe he has much of a chance to win the award. All that we have to do is check back to Lance’s preseason stats when he was up against second and third-string players. In three games, Lance completed just 46.3% of his passes and threw zero touchdowns.

Don’t waste your time backing the fresh-faced quarterback.
