23. Arizona Cardinals: Cameron Thomas, EDGE, San Diego State

One of the surprise teams in 2021 was the Arizona Cardinals who were the final unbeaten team in the NFL this season. They ended up struggling in the second half, however, and then found themselves one-and-done in the postseason.

Even so, they’re trending in the right direction and should be a team to watch going forward — especially if they can continue to add talent to their roster. They’re able to work toward that goal here as they land Cameron Thomas from San Diego State at pick No. 23.

Thomas plays a position of need, which could be an even bigger sore spot for the Cards in 2022 if they’re unable to retain Chandler Jones. The veteran pass rusher was a monster out of the gates for Arizona but before the season, he expressed a desire to play elsewhere. Perhaps things were smoothed over but if not, he’s a free agent and could decide to play elsewhere.

Of course, even if they do get him to return, this pick would still make sense. Jones is on the wrong side of 30 as is J.J. Watt, meaning they definitely need a younger player to start building their front-seven around.

The 6-foot-5, 270-pound Thomas could be exactly that. He took a huge step forward as a player this season, wracking up 10.5 sacks and 20.5 tackles for a loss.
