Jimmy Garoppolo has been on the trade block with no indication that a move is close. Here are three potential offers that could get the 49ers to make a move.
When the 2021 season ended, it seemed as though it wouldn’t be long until Jimmy Garopollo was part of a different team. But then, the quarterback musical chairs game ended and Garoppolo — as well as Baker Mayfield — were still with their respective teams.
Mayfield’s situation is different since the Cleveland Browns went out and traded several picks for Deshaun Watson, but Garoppolo still finds himself in a weird spot. San Francisco is said to be ready to move on and play Trey Lance but they also don’t want to give Garoppolo away.
Having said all of that, there’s still a chance he gets moved and here we look at three trade proposals the 49ers should take.
Jimmy Garoppolo trade proposal No. 3
New York Giants get:
Jimmy Garoppolo, QB
San Francisco 49ers get:
- 67th Overall Pick
- 81st Overall Pick
The New York Giants say they’re willing to give Daniel Jones another season, but should they? Jones has yet to light the NFL on fire and while Jimmy Garoppolo has his share of issues, it would be impossible to argue he’s a worse option than Daniel Jones at this point.
New head coach Brian Daboll does have Tyrod Taylor as well but Taylor has struggled with his consistency and durability throughout his career.
For the Niners, it would be hard to turn down two picks in Round 3 and the Giants have enough firepower to make this sacrifice for a new signal-caller.

Jimmy Garoppolo trade proposal No. 2
Pittsburgh Steelers get:
Jimmy Garoppolo, QB
San Francisco 49ers get:
- 52nd Overall Pick
- 138th Overall Pick
Much like the aforementioned New York Giants, the Pittsburgh Steelers have their starter — or at least they say they do. Right now, the Steelers are expected to go with Mitchell Trubisky although he could be challenged by Mason Rudolph — and that in itself is why there’s a chance the Steelers could be looking for an upgrade.
And Jimmy Garoppolo would be an upgrade over either of those players. In fact, he seems to be a great fit in this offense that’s all about timing and quick throws — and getting the running backs involved. Garoppolo would have no problem handing the ball off to Najee Harris and would continue to feed it to him in the passing game as well.
At receiver, they have some players who can get deep but for the past couple of seasons, they have played much closer to the line of scrimmage since Ben Roethlisberger didn’t have the same cannon he once possessed. Garoppolo can excel in such an offense — and adds another dimension since his arm is stronger than Big Ben’s was during his final season.
Pittsburgh is entering a weird season with Roethlisberger retiring and they shouldn’t simply settle for a battle of Trubisky vs. Rudolph.

Jimmy Garoppolo trade proposal No. 1
Seattle Seahawks get:
Jimmy Garoppolo, QB
San Francisco 49ers get:
- 40th Overall Pick
- 2023 Third-Round Pick
- Jacob Eason, QB
Trades within a division are rare, but they do happen. For example, when Tom Brady took over for Drew Bledsoe, the veteran was sent to the Buffalo Bills — and Bledsoe had mild success there. Also, the Philadelphia Eagles traded Donovan McNabb to the Washington Commanders when they decided to roll with Mike Vick. McNabb, however, did not have success.
Looking ahead to the 2022 season, there’s a team in the 49ers’ division that could use a new quarterback, the Seattle Seahawks. Right now, the Seahawks have Drew Lock as their starter and the only backup is Jacob Eason.
Lock has plenty of talent but he hasn’t done enough to prove he should be an unquestioned starter. While the ‘Hawks maintain he is their guy, others assume this means they’re simply tanking to rebuild. But with Pete Carroll turning 71 this season, a rebuild makes little sense.
That’s why it wouldn’t be a shock to see them go after Jimmy Garoppolo, who would be an upgrade over Lock.
Of course, since this is an in-division trade, Seattle has to offer more than anyone else to make it happen. Not only do they give up the 40th overall pick, but they also serve up their reserve quarterback and a future third as well.
This might seem like a lot for Garoppolo, but it would be hard for San Francisco to turn down, even if they have to play him twice per season.
