NFL preseason matchup no. 1: Steelers Head to Jacksonville

The Steelers and the Jaguars have both experienced different kinds of struggles since their 2017-2018 playoff matchup that sent Jacksonville to the AFC Championship Game.

The Jaguars ended up trading their stars away after failing to repeat their success. Soon enough, they were at square one again and had to rebuild.

This came with some big struggles and landed them Trevor Lawrence in the 2021 draft. They hope he is the answer to their problems and can be a franchise guy. He has the talent to be a good NFL QB.

They failed to see any growth in their record last season, but they did gain great draft position for the rebuild. They grabbed some great players including Georgia’s Travon Walker. Walker has a good first game in the Hall of Fame game against the Raiders.

His presence was felt whenever he played. He and their potential franchise QB should be on your players to watch for in week 2 when the Steelers come to town.

The Steelers have also gone through a roller coaster journey since that 2017-2018 NFL postseason. The Steelers were red hot in 2018 before losing many games down the stretch that they should have been able to win.

These included a New Orleans Saints loss that ended with a JuJu Smith-Schuster fumble. It cost the Steelers an opportunity to win the game. They could have won down in New Orleans against a great football team and gained momentum once again after beating the eventual Super Bowl champs, New England, the week before.

This disappointing ending led to the Antonio Brown fiasco. Le’Veon Bell’s holdout in 2018 also led to him leaving the team.

The Steelers suddenly when from having the best offensive trio in the NFL to everything falling apart in 2019.

The Steelers have failed to win a playoff game since. Big Ben has hung his cleats up and made way for new QBs. These are Mitchell Trubisky and Kenny Pickett.

Week 2 in Jacksonville should be a perfect time to see both QBs in Matt Canada’s offense. They will have a preseason game under their belts and be ready for a road trip in steamy Florida.

Both teams have some questions but they have all the potential in the world to be fun teams to watch on Sundays. This game should be a fun preview.
