5 moves to turn the Washington Commanders to Super Bowl contenders
2. Derek Carr should make Commanders his No. 1 stop
What separates the Commanders from the other teams in the NFC East? Quarterback play. Head coach Ron Rivera knows he has to make a change. Carson Wentz was an experiment gone wrong, and Taylor Heinicke is what he is, a spot starter. The Commanders can turn to the draft and take a guy like Anthony Richardson, but they’ll have to trade up from No. 16 inside the Top 10 to get him. No matter how great Richardson is, the likelihood of him leading the Commanders to a Super Bowl in a stacked division.
In a perfect world, the Commanders would trade the house for Lamar Jackson and ready themselves for a Super Bowl run. In this scenario, the Commanders should look to none other than Derek Carr to come in as the guy to take him to the next level.
The former Fresno State quarterback is the ideal quarterback for Eric Bieniemy thanks to his arm talent. He’s shown he can make throws in tight windows with confidence and velocity. It doesn’t matter the style of offense, given his experience under Jon Gruden and Josh McDaniels, two coaches that demand a lot from their quarterbacks.
He’s not a running quarterback, but he has mobility and enough in-pocket athleticism to extend plays. More importantly, Carr has the intangibles all NFL coaches desire. Carr doesn’t get a lot of love from the NFL media, but he has all the tools to take a team to Super Bowl. The Commanders need to be the team to sign him.
