New York Giants: Daniel Jones

Possible backup options: Case Keenum, Tyrod Taylor

The New York Giants find themselves in an interesting situation right now. The team decided to decline Daniel Jones’ fifth-year option on his rookie contract, a rather wise decision considering how the first three years of his NFL career had gone. The former top-10 pick out of Duke ended up having a nice season in year one under Brian Daboll, but was it good enough to warrant potentially $30-45 million per season?

That’s a pretty broad number right there because a lot of numbers have been floating around the rumor mill, but it doesn’t seem like Jones is about to play in 2023 for the New York Giants for less than that. That’s such a bizarre thing to think about.

Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen aren’t in good position this season to really just say they’re going to move on. They haven’t jumped into the Derek Carr mix, which might tell us all we need to know about where this team stands on Daniel Jones. He might end up getting franchise tagged and a lot of money in 2023, but I find it hard to believe that the duo of Schoen and Daboll came to New York with the intent of building around Jones for the long-term.

Behind Jones, the Giants have Tyrod Taylor but maybe they opt for another option with a high floor like Case Keenum. This team did surprisingly well in 2022, winning a playoff game and inspiring hope in not only the future of the Giants but the present as well. Winning that playoff game likely bought Daniel Jones another season as the starter but it will cost the Giants in a big way.

That franchise tag for the QB position is over $32 million this year and the Giants currently have just under $44 million in space. That wouldn’t leave them a ton of room to make other important moves to upgrade the roster. This plot could thicken quickly.
