5 NFL teams on the brink of falling apart in the 2023 offseason
1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Things are about to get really bad for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, aren’t they?
Tom Brady is officially gone. Kyle Trask is potentially about to get his shot. The Buccaneers cleaned house on their offensive staff. It was recently reported that left tackle Donovan Smith and running back Leonard Fournette are both getting cut.
And more cuts could be looming.
I think the Buccaneers are firmly in the mix for the 2024 NFL Draft at the quarterback position, which includes North Carolina’s Drake Maye and USC’s Caleb Williams. Those two guys are expected to be the top of next year’s class, and I think you will see some teams like the Bucs utilize this coming season as an opportunity to really reset, give a player like Kyle Trask or Drew Lock (who has worked with new OC Dave Canales) a real shot to play, and let whatever happens happen.
That’s where I see the Bucs looking ahead to the 2023 season. This is just not the same team that won the Super Bowl a handful of years ago now when Tom Brady was in his first year with the team. As a matter of fact, I think in the near future, it’s merely going to be a shell of that team.
The Buccaneers won the NFC South in 2022 with a record of 8-9, and they were predictably bounced very quickly from the postseason.
Bucs GM Jason Licht sees the writing on the wall, there’s no question about it.
I think it’s clear that this Bucs team is not going to simply lay down and play dead for a year, but they are walking the proverbial plank. Things are going to get bad before they get better for the Bucs. Luckily for them, if they sink the ship in 2023, they might end up with some serious treasure in the form of Caleb Williams or Drake Maye.
