We are slowly getting close to the 2025 NFL Season, so let's describe each team using just one word. Now that all the dust is settling following the NFL Draft and the schedule release, we can hone in on most of these teams and truly see how they look for the coming season.
At this point in time, there aren't many more moves left for teams to make to drastically improve their roster. We're already crossing the halfway point of May, so all of the offseason programs are going to begin to ramp up as teams get ready for the new season.
Let's take on this fun exercise and describe each NFL team using just one word.
Describing each NFL team with 1 word ahead of the 2025 season
AFC North
Baltimore Ravens - Underachieving
The regular season champions have fallen short in the playoffs year after year, as they have not won multiple games in the playoff since 2012, when Joe Flacco was still with the team. Something has to give, right?
Cincinnati Bengals - Embarrassing
An embarrassing franchise that has a history of simply not paying their players and just being an overall cheap operation. They seem to have finally angered Trey Hendrickson enough that he is going public with his feelings and is simply not holding back.
I would hate to say that until they sell the team they'll remain like this, but that is what it's feeling like.
Pittsburgh Steelers - Directionless
What are the Pittsburgh Steelers trying to do? The worst thing an NFL team can have happen to them is falling into that irrelevant middle tier of teams. Pittsburgh needs to acknowledge that enduring a lean year is what could put this franchise back on the right track.
Cleveland Browns - Bottom-feeders
And bottom-feeders might be putting it nicely - the Cleveland Browns are just circling the drain and have to hone in on a certain QB in the 2026 NFL Draft if they want to get this franchise back on track.
AFC South
Houston Texans - Close
The Houston Texans are close to becoming a contender, and it may all hinge on whether this team properly fixed their offensive line in the offseason. If so, watch out.
Tennessee Titans - Patience
Cam Ward is a bit of a raw prospect, and the Tennessee Titans are still rebuilding, so it's simply not likely that we see Ward have the success that rookie QBs in Bo Nix and Jayden Daniels had in 2024. Patience is the word for this team.
Indianapolis Colts - Clueless
Colts GM Chris Ballard has no idea what he's doing with the QB position - he's clueless. Ballard's QB moves in recent years include over-drafting Anthony Richardson and signing Daniel Jones to compete for the starting job.
He simply has no idea what's going on.
Jacksonville Jaguars - Feisty
A team that could be feisty in 2025, the Jacksonville Jaguars have a better roster than you think and could put the league on notice if first-year head coach Liam Coen can bring stability to the offense.
AFC East
Buffalo Bills - Juggernaut
A juggernaut and the best team in the AFC, the Buffalo Bills have been to two AFC Championship Games in the Josh Allen era but have been missing that coveted Super Bowl run. Could they make it happen in 2025?
New England Patriots - Sleeper
One of my favorite teams for 2025, the New England Patriots hired a legitimate head coach in Mike Vrabel and also added a ton of talent in free agency and in the 2025 NFL Draft. If you are looking for a fun breakout team for this coming season, it is absolutely the Patriots.
Drake Maye is going to skyrocket in 2025.
New York Jets - Unknown
The New York Jets ripped it down to the studs a bit in the front office and with their coaching staff, so there is simply a lot of unknown with this team at the moment, and with Justin Fields as their starting QB, things get even cloudier. This could be a nine-win team if all goes well, but also a three-win team if things take a while to come together.
Miami Dolphins - Frail
A frail team that plays poorly when the weather gets cold, the Miami Dolphins could win 12 games a year if they got to play each game at home, but that simply isn't possible.
AFC West
Kansas City Chiefs - Vulnerable
Winning all of their one-score games in 2024, the Kansas City Chiefs had way too many slim margins to not at least be a little bit vulnerable heading into 2025.
Denver Broncos - Aggressive
The Denver Broncos were aggressive in adding talent this offseason and have an aggressive-minded head coach in Sean Payton. This is another team to watch out for in 2025.
Los Angeles Chargers - Old-school
The Los Angeles Chargers now have Najee Harris, Omarion Hampton, and may still have JK Dobbins in the backfield for 2025. If you couple this with a strong defense, you see why I gave them an old-school label.
Las Vegas Raiders - New-look
New-look to say the least, right? The Las Vegas Raiders have a new GM, head coach, QB, and centerpiece on offense. It's not clear yet if all of these additions will be enough, but at least they are trying.
NFC North
Detroit Lions - Loaded
The best roster in the NFL when healthy, the Detroit Lions are locked, loaded, and could make a Super Bowl run in 2025.
Green Bay Packers - Good
This team is not great - they are merely good, and might be the most 'good' team in the NFL right now.
Minnesota Vikings - Regression
I am not sure why more people aren't talking about the real possibility that the Minnesota Vikings regress in 2025 with a de-facto rookie QB in JJ McCarthy. This team is a lot closer to winning nine or 10 games than replicating their 14-win 2024 season.
Chicago Bears - Modern
The Chicago Bears have gotten with the times, finally. They hired a sharp, offensive-minded head coach and also added loads of talent on that side of the ball as well. Bears fans might finally have something substantive to be optimistic about heading into 2025.
NFC South
Atlanta Falcons - Sneaky
With the best roster in the NFC South, the Atlanta Falcons could be a sneaky team in 2025 if Michael Penix Jr can bring modest production to the offense, and he's got the weapons and protection to do just that.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Boring
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are just boring - they aren't good enough to be a contender but aren't bad enough to be among the worst teams in the league. They are kind of just existing and need another push of talent to ascend to contender status.
New Orleans Saints - Terrible
The New Orleans Saints may end up being the worst team in the NFL in the 2025 season, and this is now especially true with the retirement of Derek Carr, which definitely came as a surprise.
Carolina Panthers - Unnoticed
Another team I love that has flown under the radar a bit, the Carolina Panthers have added a ton of talent in the Dan Morgan era and could shock the NFL world in 2025 if Bryce Young puts it all together.
NFC East
Dallas Cowboys - Confusing
The Dallas Cowboys are confusing. Mike McCarthy walked out the door, and now Brian Schottenheimer is a head coach, but this is a clear downgrade. The team was also kind of aggressive in free agency but didn't really do anything notable. It's just hard to get a pulse on this team.
Philadelphia Eagles - Champs
The defending Super Bowl champions; the Philadelphia Eagles did lose a lot of talent this offseason and also lost their offensive coordinator to a head coaching job. Nonetheless, they are the champs.
New York Giants - Brutal
The New York Giants are a bad team and also have the hardest schedule in the NFL for 2025. It's just not a great time to be a Giants fan. Some may already be wondering when they will get to see Jaxson Dart, one of their first-round picks.
Washington Commanders - Contenders
The Washington Commanders have what it takes to become contenders in the 2025 NFL Season. They won 14 total games in 2024.
NFC West
San Francisco 49ers - Transitioning
The San Francisco 49ers are clearly in a transition period and might not be ultra-competitive in 2025. However, if they begin to hit on draft picks and just bring in the right, new talent, this team could be back atop the NFL.
Arizona Cardinals - Encouraging
The Arizona Cardinals were 6-4 at one point in the 2024 NFL Season. When you looked at where this team needed to improve, it was their defensive line, and all they did was sign Josh Sweat, Calais Campbell, Dalvin Tomlinson, and draft Walter Nolen.
Watch out for this team in 2025.
Los Angeles Rams - Stable
The stable Los Angeles Rams are well-built and are again set to be a contender, and they have always seemed to be a competitive team in the Sean McVay era.
Seattle Seahawks - Resetting
It is abundantly clear that the Seattle Seahawks are resetting a bit, as many of their former foundational players are simply not there anymore.
