As we approach the bulk of Week 3, which head coaches have done the best job thus far? We power ranked the best right here.
These head coach rankings are absolutely going to change from week to week, as there are some shocking names who are in our top-10 ranking. The first two weeks of a given NFL season can truly be wild and unexpected.
However, as the season goes on, things might stabilize. We've ranked the 10-best head coaches thus far approaching Week 3. Which coaches are in our list? Let's get into it here.
Power ranking top head coaches approaching Week 3 of the 2025 NFL Season
10. Zac Taylor, Cincinnati Bengals
Zac Taylor is 2-0 for the first time in his head coaching career, but Joe Burrow is also likely missing the rest of the season with a turf toe injury. It's a brutal reality for Taylor and the Bengals, as this front office truly did add a good bit of talent this offseason.
They also were able to pay Trey Hendrickson (kind of), Tee Higgins, and Ja'Marr Chase. On paper, this was shaping up to be a great year, and the 2-0 start would have given Cincy a great chance to hang around in the AFC North.
Taylor does deserve a lot of credit here, but he's likely going to drop out of these rankings with Burrow not in. Jake Browning is their backup QB.
9. Todd Bowles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Todd Bowles is a steady head coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He's got this team off to another 2-0 start, and it feels like they will again come away with the NFC South title in the 2025 NFL Season. I have wondered how high their ceiling is, as both Bowles and Baker Mayfield feel good not great.
However, this operation is a well-oiled machine - Jason Licht is a great GM and exceptional at finding talent. Todd Bowles and his coaching staff know how to get a lot out of their players, and the team is strong where it matters the most in today's NFL.
Bowles is ninth in our head coach power rankings, but this honestly feels as high as he can get as the 2025 season progresses.
8. Jonathan Gannon, Arizona Cardinals
I have been high on the Arizona Cardinals for months now, and through two games, I am being proven right. The Cardinals weak spot this past offseason was their defensive line, so what did they do? They went out and improved their defensive line.
This is a strong roster and one that can hang with most contenders in the NFL. I do wonder just how good they can be with Kyler Murray at QB, but he's good enough to help lead this team into the postseason. I really do like the Cardinals as the fifth or sixth seed in the NFC playoffs in 2025.
7. Dan Campbell, Detroit Lions
Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions got back on track in Week 2 with a huge win over the Chicago Bears. Both sides of the ball played well, and the Lions honestly looked like their 2024 selves in Week 2. Many have wondered if this team is in for a regression since Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn are gone.
This is honestly the ultimate test for Dan Campbell, and the 1-1 Lions feel like a juggernaut. Campbell is seven in our power rankings.
6. Shane Steichen, Indianapolis Colts
Shane Steichen and the Indianapolis Colts play the Tennessee Titans in Week 3 and might honestly be 3-0 when Sunday is over, which is insane. Perhaps we have underrated the Colts all offseason? Whatever the reason for their success is, it's clear that Steichen has done a great job with this offense, and the defense is going to be in good hands with Lou Anarumo.
The Colts are riding high at 2-0 and truly feel like the best team in the AFC South, and it does not feel close. Steichen is no. 6 in our power rankings.
5. Kyle Shanahan, San Francisco 49ers
Despite the mounting injuries, the San Francisco 49ers are 2-0 on the 2025 NFL Season and have already hit one-third of their 2024 win total. San Fran won six games last year and hope to return to the playoffs, as they typically make a very deep run when they get in.
Kyle Shanahan has always been among the best head coaches in the NFL, but it truly has been the injuries that has derailed many of their seasons. With Brock Purdy unlikely to play for the second-straight game, the 49ers are going to again have to try and win with Mac Jones.
4. Jim Harbaugh, Los Angeles Chargers
Jim Harbaugh has done an awesome job with the LA Chargers thus far. What does appear to be pretty noteworthy is that this team is honestly overperforming a bit.
The Chargers don't have a ton of notable talent on either side of the ball and really struggle running the ball in 2025. Them being 2-0 with two strong division wins is impressive, and it's been the coaching that has kept this team undefeated thus far.
3. Sean McDermott, Buffalo Bills
The first 3-0 team of the 2025 NFL Season is the Buffalo Bills, who beat the Miami Dolphins on Thursday Night Football. Sean McDermott is always among the better coaches in the NFL, but he's failed to get over the hump.
The regular season is honestly just a formality at this point, as the Bills have bigger fish to fry. McDermott is third in our head coach power rankings approaching Week 3.
2. Matt LaFleur, Green Bay Packers
I could argue that the Green Bay Packers are the best team in the NFL. The Micah Parsons trade could have truly set this team over the edge, and Jordan Love has looked awesome through two weeks. The Packers might be the favorites in the NFC North at this point.
And with Love now in his third year starting, this could be the season where everything comes together.
1. Sean McVay, Los Angeles Rams
Sean McVay has been the best coach in the NFL thus far. The Los Angeles Rams are 2-0 on the season and are actually one of three undefeated teams in the NFC West. This could be a hyper-competitive division this year, but most of us would bank on the elite duo of McVay and Matthew Stafford to get it done.
One of the best head coaches of this generation, Sean McVay is first in our power rankings.
