There are many quality head coaches in the NFL. Let's power rank them approaching the 2025 NFL Season. As we know, no team is going to sustain success without a competent head coach, and they come in many different flavors.
But what we have seen in recent years are teams going more for an offensive-minded coach, and this was started when the LA Rams hired Sean McVay nearly a decade ago. Some teams have tried to copycat the Rams to no avail, but others have done much better for themselves.
As the regular season creeps up, let's power rank the head coaches one final time for the 2025 season.
Power ranking NFL head coaches for the 2025 season
Unranked: Ben Johnson, Liam Coen, Aaron Glenn, Kellen Moore, Brian Schottenheimer
Five head coaches in the NFL right now are in their first gig, so for the time being we'll leave them as unranked, but there may not be a coach under more pressure than Ben Johnson, who has the tall task of trying to get the Chicago Bears' franchise right alongside Caleb Williams.
Kellen Moore seems to have gotten a terrible hand in year one, as the New Orleans Saints could be the worst team in football, and all of Liam Coen, Aaron Glenn, and Brian Schottenheimer have uphill battles.
27. Brian Callahan, Tennessee Titans
Brian Callahan is still a bit unproven and is mostly an unknown at this point, but he went just 3-14 in his first year as the Titans' head coach.
26. Brian Daboll, New York Giants
Brian Daboll is a bad head coach, folks. Sure, they might have something there with Jaxson Dart, but have Daboll and GM Joe Schoen really done enough to warrant another year together in 2026? The New York Giants are simply a mess overall.
25. Dave Canales, Carolina Panthers
Dave Canales might have something respectable brewing with Bryce Young, but the 2025 NFL Season is going to be the major tell if that is the case. Canales seems to be an upbeat, positive, but necessarily harsh coach, and that could be a great combination, but he's only 25th in our rankings for now.
24. Shane Steichen, Indianapolis Colts
You get the sense that the 2025 NFL Season is going to be huge for the tenures of Shane Steichen and Chris Ballard. While Steichen is 17-17 in his first two seasons, which isn't terrible, his weird approach to the QB situation has thrown a lot of people off, and it just does not seem like the third-year coach has a great grip on his team. Steichen is 24th in our power rankings.
23. Raheem Morris, Atlanta Falcons
Raheem Morris and the Atlanta Falcons could win the NFC South in the 2025 NFL Season, but it's going to take a huge leap from Michael Penix Jr and an overall well-coached team from Morris. The veteran coach really isn't anything special but has been in the NFL for quite some time, so the experience is there if nothing else.
22. Mike McDaniel, Miami Dolphins
Early on, it seemed like the Miami Dolphins had the next elite head coach in Mike McDaniel, but his almost high school-like personality doesn't seem to jive with an NFL team, so McDaniel's ranking has taken a hit for the 2025 NFL Season. Absolutely not a bad head coach, he's likely not in the best spot right now and might have to reset him as an offensive coordinator, as he'l absolutely get another shot down the line if he does not survive 2025.
21. Kevin Stefanski, Cleveland Browns
I had a hard time placing Kevin Stefanski on this list, as the Deshaun Watson trade blowing up in their faces was not something that most saw coming. Stefanski's leash still might be quite long since that trade went about as badly as possible, but I just can't bring myself to rank him much higher.
20. Pete Carroll, Las Vegas Raiders
Now with the Las Vegas Raiders in what is likely his last coaching stop in the NFL, Pete Carroll might have his tallest task yet, as this franchise has been dysfunctional and poorly-run for years. Can Carroll stop that madness and get them on the right track?
19. Mike Vrabel, New England Patriots
Mike Vrabel knows how to win and is probably going to shoot up these rankings for the 2025 NFL Season, as the New England Patriots have what it takes to be a breakout team, and Vrabel has coached a plethora of winning teams during his time with the Tennessee Titans.
18. Mike Macdonald, Seattle Seahawks
A 10-7 record in year one, Mike Macdonald's team in 2024 was the only double-digit win squad that didn't make the playoffs, which is quite interesting. He's 18th in our power rankings and might have an even tougher time at a winning record in 2025.
17. Jonathan Gannon, Arizona Cardinals
Going from four wins in 2023 to eight in 2024, Jonathan Gannon and the Arizona Cardinals are on the right track, and the NFC West could be wide open in the 2025 season. At one point in 2024, the Cardinals were 6-4, so this team is close.
16. Zac Taylor, Cincinnati Bengals
Zac Taylor is a fine head coach, but he's nothing special. Taylor has an awful habit of getting out to slow starts, as it plagues him and the Cincinnati Bengals every single season. It leaves the franchise trying to catch up. In 2024, they were just 4-8 through 12 games, and they had then proceeded to win five games to close out the season. Despite that win streak, they were out of the playoffs. Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase are going most of the heavy-lifting for this franchise.
15. Todd Bowles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
An average head coach, Todd Bowles inherited a great situation and simply has to not mess up, but there really isn't anything that separates him from some of the better head coaches in the NFL, but he knows how to do his job at a relatively high level.
14. DeMeco Ryans, Houston Texans
With 20 regular season wins over his first two seasons, DeMeco Ryans and the Houston Texans are in a great spot, but you'd like to see them do more in the 2025 NFL Season. If they can't, I would personally wonder if Ryans would be the right coach to lead this team into contention. He's 14th in our power rankings.
13. Jim Harbaugh, Los Angeles Chargers
Jim Harbaugh could shoot up these rankings in 2025. After a decade in college, Harbaugh returned to the NFL and was 11-6 in his first season as the LA Chargers' head coach, but they got blown out in the playoffs, and we simply do not know if Harbaugh will be capable of leading LA to anything more, so he's not going to be ranked super high as of now.
12. Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh Steelers
Never finishing with a losing record, Mike Tomlin is 12th in our power rankings. He's not an elite head coach anymore and clearly does not know how to ascend back to that level.
11. John Harbaugh, Baltimore Ravens
Can the Baltimore Ravens win more than one game in the postseason? Having not done that since 2012, John Harbaugh is a lot like Mike Tomlin - very good head coaches who are simply maxed out at this point.
10. Sean McDermott, Buffalo Bills
The Buffalo Bills get in their own way sometimes, but Sean McDermott has led this team well, and he's a big reason why they are contenders most every single season.
9. Matt LaFleur, Green Bay Packers
Can Matt LaFleur lead his Packers' team to the top of the NFC North? Can this entire operation take a sizeable step forward in 2025?
8. Kyle Shanahan, San Francisco 49ers
Kyle Shanahan is a very good head coach whose bad seasons are almost always due to mounting injuries, so I am not going to fall into the myth that he can't coach or is somehow overrated. He knows how to coach and has been to two Super Bowls since 2019.
7. Nick Sirianni, Philadelphia Eagles
Winning the Super Bowl in 2024 and appearing in two of the last three, Nick Sirianni has a tough job to manage all of the strong personalities on the Eagles, and he has to almost navigate an extremely tough fanbase as well, but he seems to be the right man for that job.
6. Dan Campbell, Detroit Lions
Dan Campbell is a very good head coach whose true skillset will be tested without Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn in 2025. If Campbell and the Detroit Lions hardly miss a step, Campbell might be owed some apologies. He's sixth in our power rankings.
5. Sean Payton, Denver Broncos
Sean Payton simply knows what he's doing and led a team that many considered to be a bottom-3 squad in the NFL to the playoffs in 2024. Payton has improved this team gradually since taking over and could truly field a juggernaut in the 2025 NFL Season, as Denver really isn't missing all that much, if anything.
4. Kevin O'Connell, Minnesota Vikings
A quarterback savant and a darn good head coach, Kevin O'Connell is fourth in our power rankings and might have his toughest task to date in trying to develop JJ McCarthy, who missed his entire rookie season with a knee injury.
3. Dan Quinn, Washington Commanders
Dan Quinn helped lead the Washington Commanders to just one game shy of the Super Bowl in the 2024 NFL Season. Quinn has coached in the big game before and could take his second NFL team to the championship. Quinn is an excellent defensive mind and a supreme motivator as well. He's third in our power rankings.
2. Sean McVay, Los Angeles Rams
A future Hall of Fame coach, Sean McVay won the Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams back in the 2021 NFL Season and is simply an elite head coach year in and year out. He's likely got a Super Bowl-caliber squad for the 2025 NFL Season, so if QB Matthew Stafford can stay healthy, the Rams are going to make a deep run. McVay is also still one of the youngest head coaches in the NFL.
1. Andy Reid, Kansas City Chiefs
Arguably the greatest head coach of all-time, Andy Reid is also one of the winningest ever and is still stacking wins and titles with the Kansas City Chiefs. Now a three-time Super Bowl champion, Reid has established himself on the Mount Rushmore of all-time head coaches and might still have a few seasons left in the tank.
Unquestionably, he is first in our head coach power rankings for 2025.
