You might see nearly half the league try and upgrade their QB position this coming offseason, but these three teams urgently need a new passer when 2024 begins. If a team does not have a top passer, they won't win games, and it's just that simple. Without an elite QB, teams can hang around being painfully average, but for the most part, those teams ar wholly irrelevant.
Well, with teams getting more and more aggressive each offseason, I think we could see a plethora of teams attempt to upgrade their QB situation. However, there are a few teams that stick out to me as desperately needing to add a new QB to the mix in 2023.
Which three teams would they be?
3 NFL teams who desperately need a new QB in 2024
1. New England Patriots
The New England Patriots arguably have the worst QB situation in the NFL with Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe. Currently, they hold the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, which might not be high enough for Caleb Williams or Drake Maye. However, the Patriots are still in a good spot to land a potential franchise passer.
The Pats need much more than a QB, but they need to start with the most important position in sports. Adding much-needed help at WR and OL would be other top priorities for the team in 2024.
2. Washington Commanders
Sam Howell began his second season in the NFL on an encouraging note, but he's really regressed as a passer this year and has thrown a whopping 19 interceptions on just 20 touchdown passes. Over Howell's first eight games of the 2023 NFL Season, he threw 13 touchdown passes against eight interceptions at had a 90.1 passer rating at one point.
Since then, however, he's thrown seven touchdown passes against 11 interceptions for a lowly passer rating of 67.8. He was actually benched for Week 17 before a last-minute injury by Jacoby Brissett, the backup, forced Howell back into the lineup. Well, the Commanders currently hold the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, so they are in prime position to draft a QB.
And with head coach Ron Rivera likely out the door in 2024, the Commanders have a perfect chance to reset their franchise with a new head coach and a viable young QB. Washington has been irrelevant for years, and it's mainly been due to inept ownership and inconsistent QB play. Well, the team has a new ownership group in place and have a chance to land a top QB prospect.
Things could be looking up for this team in 2024.
3. New York Giants
I mean come on man, Daniel Jones and Tommy DeVito, really? The New York Giants made a bafflingly silly decision to pay Daniel Jones last offseason, and the Tommy DeVito thing was fun for about two weeks. The cold, hard truth is that the Giants are a bad football team until they get a franchise QB in the building.
And right now, they have the fifth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. They went 9-7-1 last year and won a playoff game, but they aren't close to being that type of team anytime soon without a new QB. To be fair to the Giants, they endured a ton of injuries this year and Jones regressed as a passer. He's been out for a while with a torn ACL and I think the Giants move on from him after the 2024 NFL Season.
With a premier, top-five pick, the Giants are in a great spot to reset their situation at the position and give head coach Brian Daboll a good chance to get the QB right in New York. Their offensive line is atrocious and the team also needs more juice at WR and TE, but like the Patriots, getting the QB right first should be their top priority.
This is probably going to be a make-or-break year for Daboll and GM Joe Schoen, so they need to put a viable plan in place at the position.
