The bulk of preseason football is soon approaching, so let's dive into our latest NFL power rankings as games return. In a few short weeks, regular season games return to the field. We are inching closer and closer, and the bulk of the NFL preseason games will also soon begin.
There are 32 teams in the NFL who hope to win the Super Bowl this year, but there may only be about 10 who can truly do that. Power ranking all 32 NFL teams is a daunting task, and it's always subjective. However, that won't stop us from rolling out our latest power rankings.
Let's rank all 32 teams ahead of the 2024 NFL Preseason!
NFL power rankings: Ranking all 32 teams ahead of preseason Week 1
32. New York Giants
Perhaps the worst roster in the NFL, the New York Giants are just a mess in every way possible. They passed up on three first-round QBs in favor of the second-best WR in the class, and will go into the 2024 NFL Season with Daniel Jones as their starter. I am not entirely sure what GM Joe Schoen planned on doing, but it's not working.
The Giants may struggle to win just a small handful of games in the 2024 NFL Season.
31. New England Patriots
The New England Patriots are definitely in for a lean year, as they enter the first year of the post-Bill Belichick era. It was a shocking move to some that the organization moved on from Belichick, but it was a needed move. The Patriots took Drake Maye in the 2024 NFL Draft, so they are at least embracing the rookie QB route, but the roster is still thoroughly awful and will take multiple years to shore up.
De-facto GM Eliot Wolf has a huge mess to clean up that was left by Belichick, so this is going to be a long process. Do not expect much from the 2024 New England Patriots.
30. Washington Commanders
I personally think the Washington Commanders should have taken Drake Maye over Jayden Daniels, and I also think they needed to do much, much more along their offensive line this year. It’s been a mixed bag for first-year GM Adam Peters, who is seemingly trying to assemble the All-2017 team, as he signed Austin Ekeler, Zach Ertz, and Bobby Wagner in free agency this offseason.
The re-tread hire of Dan Quinn was simply whelming, so there’s just a lot that I am unsure of with this team. I do not personally look at the Commanders as being close to a competitive team, as the roster needs a ton of work still, and Peters’ first offseason seems shaky at best.
29. Carolina Panthers
Do not rule out the Carolina Panthers from being a frisky team this year. New head coach Dave Canales has worked wonders with both Geno Smith in 2022 and Baker Mayfield in 2023, so I like his chances to unlock something with second-year QB, Bryce Young. The Panthers roster is underrated and has studs on both sides of the ball, so a six-ish win season feels like where the Panthers will end up.
And that would be a huge welcome sight based on last year, when they won just two games.
28. Tennessee Titans
If nothing else, you have to give the Titans front office credit for at least surrounding second-year QB Will Levis will some talent. Whether it’s the right talent remains to be seen, but he now has a three-headed monster at WR in Calvin Ridley, Tyler Boyd, and DeAndre Hopkins. JC Latham and Lloyd Cushenberry enter the mix along the offensive line, and Tony Pollard is now in the backfield.
However, I just do not see a lot of potential with this team with a QB who was shaky as a rookie and a first-year head coach in Brian Callahan. The Titans could win five games in 2024.
27. Las Vegas Raiders
What exactly were the Las Vegas Raiders trying to do this offseason? I just do not know where to begin. They missed out on a first-round QB in the 2024 NFL Draft, overpaid for Gardner Minshew, and now do not have any sort of long-term QB option in the building. They overpaid for DT Christian Wilkins in free agency, and also hired a failed re-tread GM in Tom Telesco.
I’d also argue that Antonio Pierce’s ascendence to the HC role has been way too fast, as he was just a position coach last year. Overall, the Raiders feel like a mediocre, top-heavy team that won’t amount to much in 2024.
26. New Orleans Saints
The New Orleans Saints just need to tear this thing down and rebuild, as the duo of Derek Carr and Dennis Allen is not going to do anything. The roster is old at a ton of positions and is not at all setup for the long-term. It’s been a puzzling couple of years for GM Mickey Loomis, but the Saints again have an easy enough schedule where eight or nine wins would not be surprising.
25. Seattle Seahawks
Clearly set to enter a bit of a rebuild next offseason, the Seattle Seahawks may use the first year of the Mike Macdonald era to evaluate some of the young players on their roster to see if they fit the new culture and are worth keeping around for the long-term. QB Geno Smith is in his mid-30s and is not a long-term option, so I would expect this team to begin a more aggressive search for a franchise QB next offseason.
Seattle also needs a ton of help along their offensive line and need to unlock their talented defense. Look for the Seahawks to win 6-8 games in the 2024 NFL Season.
24. Arizona Cardinals
One of my breakout candidates for 2024, the Arizona Cardinals may double their win total from 2023, a year in which they won four games. Kyler Murray is another year removed from his ACL injury, and the roster is also another year better. While the Cardinals are still another offseason away from truly competing and being contenders, they can make a bit of noise in 2024.
23. Los Angeles Chargers
The Los Angeles Chargers won the Jim Harbaugh sweepstakes, but the roster is still a work in progress besides a few key players on both sides of the ball. I see LA struggling to finish with a winning record in 2024, but Harbaugh has had success at every single head coaching job of his career.
22. Chicago Bears
Now with Caleb Williams under center, the Chicago Bears could truly skyrocket in these power rankings in a few months. I am 100% acknowledging that this team could be a huge problem for their opponents. The Bears defnses ended the year on a hot-streak in 2023, and the team did quietly win seven games.
To me, as long as Williams is not a total disaster in year one, the 2024 Bears could battle for a Wild Card spot. The amount of pressure on Caleb Williams to perform is absolutely insane.
21. Minnesota Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings decided that they had enough of the Kirk Cousins era, as they let him depart in free agency. They signed Sam Darnold in free agency and took JJ McCarthy in the 2024 NFL Draft, so the team is clearly trying to embrace the rookie QB route, which is the right way to go. Overall, the Vikings roster is nearly complete.
If rookie JJ McCarthy ends up being the guy for them, the Vikings could actually be a problem in 2025. It's not clear if McCarthy will earn the starting job, but right now, Darnold seems to be in the driver's seat for the team, which is OK. McCarthy is just 21 years old.
20. Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos won eight games in the 2023 NFL Season, finishing the year 7-4 after starting 1-5. They also upgraded at several positions, including QB. The Broncos finishing with a winning record should really not at all be a shock, but the NFL world largely seems to be low on the Broncos for 2024, but I just do not get it.
Sure, they are far from being a great team, but the Broncos do have a lot of pieces ready to roll.
19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won nine games, the NFC South division, and a playoff game in 2023. It was quite the year for the Bucs, who extended Baker Mayfield, Mike Evans, and Tristan Wirfs. One big piece that is now missing is former offensive coordinator Dave Canales, who is now the Carolina Panthers head coach.
That loss might be too big for them to bounce back from. I do not envision them winning the division in the 2024 NFL Season.
18. Pittsburgh Steelers
The Pittsburgh Steelers somehow won 10 games in the 2023 NFL Season, but they may not have upgraded their QB situation. Both Justin Fields and Russell Wilson were disposed of by their former teams, so that should tell you what their previous teams thought about them. However, the team has never finished with a losing record in the Mike Tomlin era, so they are likely going to at least be good for nine wins, right?
17. Philadelphia Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles were not a good football team last year, as they were barely scraping by in most of their wins and had pretty inconsistent QB play from Jalen Hurts. They brought in Kellen Moore as their new offensive coordinator and Vic Fangio to be their new defensive coordinator, but that might not be enough.
Yes, the Eagles have a very good roster, but nothing they did in 2023 really gives me much confidence that they can rebound in 2024. Their breakout 2022 season seemed largely due to their coordinators back then. They had Shane Steichen as the OC and Jonathon Gannon as the DC. Both of them have head coaching jobs now.
16. Indianapolis Colts
The Indianapolis Colts won nine games in the 2023 NFL Season with Gardner Minshew taking most of the snaps. Indy can be a surprise breakout team once again in 2024 if second-year QB Anthony Ricardson can get close to his ceiling. But the way I see it is if Shane Steichen was able to field an efficient offense with Gardner Minshew, the sky is truly the limit with Richardson.
The Colts could be a sneaky team to watch in 2024.
15. New York Jets
The New York Jets might end up being one of the top teams in the NFL for the 2024 season, but the last time we saw Aaron Rodgers play a season, he was not that great. That came in 2022, his last season with the Green Bay Packers. He finished with a passer rating in the low-90s and was just not his normal self.
He tore his Achilles to begin the 2023 NFL Season, so the entire year ended up being a wash for the Jets. If Rodgers can return to his back-to-back MVP form in 2020 and 2021, the Jets are going to be a Super Bowl contender, but that might be a huge ask for Rodgers, who turns 41 years old at the end of the regular season.
14. Atlanta Falcons
Signing Kirk Cousins in free agency, the Atlanta Falcons feel like a lock to win the NFC South, as they have a good roster. They were truly missing the QB to be competitive once again, and while there is an obvious ceiling with Cousins as the starting QB, they are by far the best team in the NFC South.
Them winning double-digit games and hosting a playoff game is not at all out of the question. Cousins will have a reliable offensive line, very good weapons, and a sound defense to work with in 2024. How will he play coming off of a torn Achilles, though? That could impact him in a big way, as he is closer to 40 than 30.
13. Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jacksonville Jaguars just made Trevor Lawrence the highest-paid QB in NFL history. He's tied with Joe Burrow and Jordan Love at $55 million per year, and when you look at this roster, it's hard to not like it. This is easily the best roster of the Lawrence era, and after their brutal stretch to end 2023, the pressure is mounting for this team to breakout beyond what they did in 2022.
Can Lawrence be the one who leads this Jaguars team on a deep playoff run in 2024, at least? They have a Super Bowl-winning head coach in Doug Pederson, so that's a huge plus.
12. Buffalo Bills
The Buffalo Bills have had to shed some veteran contracts this offseason and seem to be in more of a re-tooling season. Now without both Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis, the Bills WR room is among the worst in the NFL, as it's likely that one of Keon Coleman or Curtis Samuel ends up being the top option for Josh Allen.
Yeah, not idea. The Bills feel like more of an average team in 2024 than anything else.
11. Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys are, well, the Cowboys. They lost quite a bit this offseason, perhaps most notably losing Dan Quinn to the Washington Commanders. Replacing Quinn is veteran defensive mind Mike Zimmer. The Cowboys have also not yet been able to extend Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, or Micah Parsons, so this has truly been an offseason to forget for the Cowboys.
I do not envision this team going very far if they make it to the postseason in 2024.
10. Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers late-season surge led by Jordan Love has them sitting pretty for the 2024 NFL Season and beyond. Love is now tied for being the highest-paid QB in NFL history, as his contract is paying him $55 million per season, which is an insane number.
He is tied with Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence at $55 million per year. The Packers aren't spending a ton of money at a lot of other positions, so the franchise itself might be in even better shape for the long-term as well as for the present.
9. Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns could genuinely be a Super Bowl contender if Deshaun Watson remembers how to play football again. That's the issue, though, as Watson does not look like a franchise QB anymore, but the Browns did give him a fully-guaranteed deal. On pace to be the worst trade in the history of the NFL, Watson and the Browns need to figure something out, but their roster otherwise is excellent.
8. Los Angeles Rams
Winning 10 games in the 2023 NFL Season, the Los Angeles Rams are right back in the Super Bowl contention mix. Matthew Stafford was ridiculous once again, even though his statistics do not exactly show it. I would bet quite a bit that the LA Rams are going to be playing very deep in the NFC playoffs this year.
The job done by GM Les Snead in re-tooling this roster after the Super Bowl in 2021 cannot be overstated. This is an excellent, young, and up and coming team.
7. Baltimore Ravens
I am not that high on the Baltimore Ravens for the 2024 NFL Season, but they have been reliable for so long, so it does not feel right to put them lower on these power rankings. It's clear that John Harbaugh and Lamar Jackson aren't going to win a Super Bowl together, and them losing Mike Macdonald to the Seattle Seahawks is going to be a tough adjustment to make.
This is still a playoff team, though.
6. Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins are the best, most talented team in the AFC East at the moment, and I predict that they will win the division. Perhaps a bold one, I like the Dolphins to squeeze a title out from the Buffalo Bills, who have owned the division the last several seasons. The Bills are in a bit of a re-tooling, as they have had to shed some veteran contracts.
Josh Allen threw about 58 interceptions last year, so the Dolphins can take advantage in 2024. Tua Tagovailoa just got paid over $53 million per season, and is ready to finally silence the critics.
5. Cincinnati Bengals
Make no mistake; when Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow is healthy, there is only one better QB in the NFL, and the Bengals are among the best in the league. They made the Super Bowl in 2021, bouncing the Kansas City Chiefs out of the postseason, and Cincy appears poised to be elite once again in 2024.
The roster is very good from top to bottom, but the biggest factor here is the health of Joe Burrow, as the QB must figure out a way to stay on the field, no ifs, or buts about it.
4. Houston Texans
The Houston Texans will win the Super Bowl this year, and you can take that to the bank. This team was excellent in 2023, and they won 10 games and the division with a rookie quarterback and a rookie head coach, which is simply unheard of. Houston truly does not have a major weakness on the roster and should be an elite football team in 2024.
3. San Francisco 49ers
It's hard to imagine the San Francisco 49ers not at least making it to the conference championship game in the 2024 NFL Season. They have been, routinely, one of the three best teams in the NFL for years now. The braintrust of Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch is clearly working, but can they eventually get over the hump and win a Super Bowl?
They have lost two big games since the 2019 NFL Season.
2. Detroit Lions
I do believe the Detroit Lions are in the Super Bowl in the 2024 NFL Season. To me, this is the best roster in the entire NFL, which is a credit to how great of a job GM Brad Holmes has done during his first few seasons with the Lions. A ton of credit also goes to head coach Dan Campbell and QB Jared Goff, who has revived his career with the team.
1. Kansas City Chiefs
A team that has won three Super Bowls over the last five seasons, the Kansas City Chiefs are still the best team in the NFL until proven otherwise. While I personally believe there are several more talented teams on paper, KC proved that top-end roster talent is simply not needed. The Chiefs were quite inefficient on offense at times, but a bruising defense helped lead the way.
Can they become the first team in NFL history to win three Super Bowls in a row?
