The opening week of the 2023 NFL season did not disappoint. Although there were some low-scoring games and not the greatest offensive performances league-wide, the NFL is back and it was an exciting first week of action, even for NFL picks and predictions.

Green Bay Packers (1-0) @ Atlanta Falcons (1-0)

First, let’s talk about the road team in this matchup — the Green Bay Packers. The Packers were outstanding in the 2023 debut of quarterback Jordan Love, and they went into Chicago and continued to “own” the Bears just as they did when Aaron Rodgers was the quarterback. This time, however, it was a different “Aaron” that was owning the Bears. Aaron Jones was dynamic all throughout the Packers’ matchup with the Bears, not only as a runner but receiver as well.

Baltimore Ravens (1-0) @ Cincinnati Bengals (0-1)

Joe Burrow, fresh off of signing his massive new contract which set an NFL record at $55 million in average annual value, couldn’t get anything going. A 3-24 loss at the hands of the Cleveland Browns is unquestionably not the way the Bengals wanted to start this season, even if you consider the Browns to be one of the league’s most improved teams in 2023 (they are).

Chicago Bears (0-1) @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-0)

Not that you fault them for it, either, but then again, GM Ryan Poles didn’t pick Justin Fields. The Bears’ huge loss at home to Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers was a monumental disappointment, and the team didn’t look any better than what we saw last year. Justin Fields was sacked five times and threw a pick-six against the Bears’ division “rivals” in Week 1, leading to major question marks in Week 2. How’s he going to look against a Tampa Bay defense that had a great game against the Vikings in Week 1?

Kansas City Chiefs (0-1) @ Jacksonville Jaguars (1-0)

It was not a good showing for the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1 of the 2023 season as they lost at home to the upstart Detroit Lions. It wasn’t even that the Chiefs played poorly overall. Their defense did a good job considering they didn’t have star defensive lineman Chris Jones (who was attending the game, to make matters even worse). It wasn’t even that Patrick Mahomes made mistakes. It was the supporting cast.

San Francisco 49ers (1-0) @ Los Angeles Rams (1-0)

The 49ers notched arguably the most impressive win of Week 1, all things considered, a 30-7 drubbing in Pittsburgh. The Steelers are one of the best home teams in the NFL over the last couple of decades and certainly under Mike Tomlin. The 49ers just unleashed their pass rush and a barrage of offense that the Steelers couldn’t keep up with.

Cleveland Browns (1-0) @ Pittsburgh Steelers (0-1)

How can you not be impressed with what you saw from the Cleveland Browns on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals? The Bengals got three points on the board, but it felt more like a shutout for the Cleveland defense, which was suffocating all day long.

  • 2 sacks
