Report: New York Jets and Darrelle Revis Close to Deal

Tim Cowlishaw of the Dallas Morning News, and a frequent guest on ESPN’s Around the Horn, is reporting via Twitter that the New York Jets and All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis are close to a deal.

“Revis and Jets announce new deal, probably Wednesday,” Cowlishaw tweeted. “You heard it here first. ‘Inside information!'”

Cowlishaw goes on to dispel rumors that his account must have been hacked, seemingly answering every follower questioning his account’s authenticity.

Usually guys will say something so vague as to say that a deal will be done “soon” or “in the coming weeks,” but Cowlishaw is pointing at a specific day that an announcement will be made. So either he’s taking a real shot in the dark and hoping to be right, or he truly has a guy who at least believes he’s got some “inside information.”

While his name might have national recognition thanks to Tony Reali and ESPN, I’m still wondering how a guy in Dallas would have a source with information on the goings-on in New York and with the Jets. And, as several people have pointed out, Cowlishaw isn’t even a reporter. He’s a columnist.

And making matters worse for Cowlishaw is that the New York Daily News and the Newark Star-Ledger are completely refuting the report and basically saying Cowlishaw is an idiot.

But, like Cowlishaw points out on his Twitter account, the beat writers could just be a bit irritated that’s he’s scooped them and at the same time is making them look bad. It’s a fair point, but they’re not the only ones disputing the report.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter, again via Twitter, also isn’t buying the story.

When a follower asks Schefter if there’s any truth to the rumor, Schefter replies: “In my opinion, no. Not true. A deal by (Wednesday) would surprise me.”

Scooping a few beat writers happens a lot, but scooping Adam Schefter is an occurrence far more rare. So unless Cowlishaw’s source could tell us things that would make Deep Throat do a double-take, this is likely off the mark.

But, as Cowlishaw says, I guess we’ll just have to wait until Wednesday.
