Peter King: Tom Brady, New England Patriots Agree to Four-Year Extension

Peter King just came on air during NBC’s halftime show and announced that Robert Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots, told him that the team has come to an agreement with quarterback Tom Brady on a four-year extension.

According to King, Kraft would not discuss terms of the deal but King opined, as does everyone else, that the deal will pay Brady approximately $20 million per season. A deal like that would make him the highest-paid player in NFL history in terms of per-season salary.

The rumored numbers have been three years at $58 million, so it’s likely the deal is something along the lines of four years and $78 million. The guaranteed number has everyone guessing, but I would assume over half is guaranteed dollars.

It’s possible that Brady and his camp demanded more guaranteed money than this year’s No. 1 overall pick, Sam Bradford, who got $50 million in guarantees. It’s likely Brady got about that much. I’m not exactly going out on a limb but my guess would be somewhere in the area of $45-55 million in guarantees.

The deal should be finalized early Friday, so it’s going to be very interesting to see what the exact numbers are. And if you think you’re curious, just imagine how closely Peyton Manning and his camp is monitoring the situation.

Manning, for those of you who don’t know, is a free agent after the 2010 season and is expecting to get the largest contract in NFL history — something he undoubtedly deserves.

Perhaps now ESPN can talk about something other than Brady’s car accident.

UPDATE: Jason La Canfora is reporting via Twitter that Brady’s extension will kick in after 2010 season and is four years, $72 million with $49 million guaranteed and several injury guarantees.
