Oakland Raiders Finally Make a Head Coaching Decision

I was not a fan of the move to fire Tom Cable. I thought getting rid of him was taking a team that was heading in the right direction and moving them at least two steps backwards.

But with the announcement that Al Davis has promoted offensive coordinator Hue Jackson, it’s looking like they might only take one step back.

ESPN’s Michael Smith was the first to scoop the story, and it’s now been confirmed by Jay Glazer, Adam Schefter, and even the Oakland Raiders themselves. Jackson was said to be the top candidate all along, but no one really knew what Davis was thinking. He’s come so far out of left field on several occasions it was hard to judge, but this was the best of a bad situation.

Promoting Jackson gives the players some semblance of continuity. They can be fairly certain that Jackson is not going to blow up the system because he is the one who implemented the system — at least on the offensive side of the ball. And unless he’s a complete control freak, he’ll likely hire a defensive coordinator who can run the same type of system.

The first thing Jackson must do is decide on a quarterback. Jason Campbell, to me, looks like the guy who gives them the best chance to win as long as he can stay healthy. From there, they must surround him with some more weapons on the outside and continue to shore up what has the makings of a very good defense.

It’s just another year in Raider Nation.
