NFL Free Agency 2012: Washington Redskins Plan To Franchise Fred Davis

When news broke late in 2011 that Fred Davis would be suspended for four games after breaking the NFL’s substance abuse policy, some believed that we had seen the last of Davis in Washington.

Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network says otherwise.

In a report on CSNWashington.com, La Canfora states that the Redskins intend to put the franchise tag on Davis prior to free agency. The deadline for this is March 13.

While on many teams this may have been an overreaction to the prospect of losing a talented yet troubled player, this is the Washington Redskins. They have a boatload of money, alot of cap room to spare and a Head Coach with an incentive to win at all costs coupled with an owner who will do anything to take his franchise back to the promised land.

Bringing Davis back makes sense for Washington and especially if it is only for a year. The team still has veteran Chris Cooley coming back in 2012 and Cooley has been the bellcow of the offense for a long time now. Should the worst happen, the Redskins would have options and the ability to cut bait with Davis should that be necessary.

Does it make sense to pay the tight end $5.5 million? No way. They should get him for $2 million. However, is it worth it when you have the cap room to spend, the contract only has to be for a year and the player in question may be suspended again should he re-violate the NFL’s rules. Absolutely.
