Top Available Free Agent Running Backs

As we continue our 2012 NFL Free Agency coverage, we move on to take a look at the top available running backs in the free agent class. As with the quarterbacks class, the running back boasts a future Hall of Famer, along with Super Bowl champions, Madden cover athletes and some hard-nosed runners.

Which of these recognizable names and top available rushers could end up landing on your teams roster?

  • Brandon Jacobs

Jacobs was recently released by the New York Giants and brings a rare size/speed combo to the running back position. If that wasn’t enough, Jacobs bruising style will make him a perfect goal line back for any team that wants a hard-nosed runner in the red zone. It is very possible that Jacobs stays in New York, but with different colors.

  • Michael Bush

Michael Bush is an incredibly talented running back that has been ignored, largely in part to playing behind Darren McFadden in Oakland. Just a season ago, Bush racked up well over 1,000 total yards and seven touchdowns. He could be one of the more underrated signings that will pay off big for a team next year. Look for a team like the Cincinnati Bengals to make a play for Bush.

  • Peyton Hillis

It seems like just yesterday Peyton Hillis was flying high in the football world. He was Madden cover athlete and then it all went south. Hillis’ relationship soured with the Browns and illness kept him off the field for a number of weeks. Hillis could still have something left in the tank if a team is willing to pay his asking price.

  • BenJarvus Green-Ellis

It is being reported that teams are lining up for BenJarvus Green-Ellis, so “The Law Firm” could be in for a big payday. Were it not for the Patriots crowded backfield, New England would likely try to hold on to Green-Ellis. They could still make a play for the back, but I expect he gets away. Coming to Kansas City as a compliment for Jamal Charles would make perfect sense.

  • Cedric Benson

Benson is a trusty veteran that will get you the hard earned yards. He is another back that will be able to help teams looking to bolster their redzone offense. He may be a bit of a head case off-the-field, but someone will give Benson the money he wants.

  • Ryan Grant

Grant is an aging rusher that has fallen out of favor in Green Bay. The team prefers their other options over the veteran. Grant has openly stated that he would like to return to the Packers, but it is unlikely that he will return to Lambeau in 2012.

  • LaDainian Tomlinson

Here is the future Hall of Famer. Tomlinson said that he is not yet ready to retire and he would like to play again in 2012. I am not sure how much Tomlinson has left in the tank, but you know someone will take a chance on him and give him a shot to join their committee of running backs.

  • Mike Tolbert

Tolbert brings the ability to really help in the passing game. He could be the missing piece to the puzzle for an offense that is looking for a versatile back to fill out their offense. Tolbert is definitely one of the top third-down backs available in free agency and a team like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could give him a long look.
