Top Five Free Agent Pass Rushers Available

Since the NFL is transforming into a passing league, it is now more than ever that teams are focusing on getting pressure on the opposing quarterbacks. Some of the most sought after free agents are the pass rushers, and there is a brilliant crop of players available this year.

Who are some of the top free agent pass rushers? Let’s have a look.

  • Mario Williams: He missed a majority of the 2011 season, but in the games he played he was able to get consistant pressure on the opposing quarterback and got a sack in every game he played. There is no doubt that Williams is one of the most dominant pass rushers in the game, and if teams can get their hands on him, Williams will be in or a huge pay day.
  • Cliff Avril: After coming off a career season where he recorded 11 sacks, Avril will be looking for a long-term lucrative deal. He has made it clear that he wants to stay in Detroit next season, but a holdout could be in store if the Lions slap him with the franchise tag.
  • John Abraham: After 12 seasons in the league, Abraham has lost a step, but is still one of the most feared pass rushers in the NFL. He is the active career sack leader in the NFL and hopes to be resigned by the Falcons to finish his career with the team who drafted him.
  • Robert Mathis: Another aging pass rusher is Robert Mathis. He has been a perennial Pro Bowler and has terrorized opposing quarterbacks for his entire career, but with the Colts cleaning house the way they are I expect to see Mathis wearing a different uniform next season.
  • Andre Carter: Carter had a very good season. Although he too is an aging star, he had somewhat of a resurgence this season with double digits in sacks.  With one of the Patriots biggest needs being at defensive end to pressure quarterbacks, I expect to see Carter back with the Patriotss in 2012.
